'.. and there are those precincts of our cayden city where splendour writhes with darkness, and macabre lies in plainest sight. Springs of light and life are as harbingers to putrescence and blight, and where all things sing and burgeon one wrests with doom's looming aspect. The sides of Calais segue into the other and feed. Having sojourned some months here you see everywhere darkness in light, and then light in darkness; and ere long after you shall know both in weighted measure, you shall make your peace.'

Calais – Alto and tenor Louis horns contest before the console of the Alaheim oegel. The great pipes will have their shutters mostways down, or the soloists will likely not be heard.
House organists with the Alaheim become one with it, employing no stop-pullers. As with all Calaisian oegel of this scale, there is a palpable (albeit precise) delay between striking a key and hearing the assigned rank or pipe sound. This presents no obstacle to the lone master of practice, and collaborating instrumentalists have devised a variety of means to work round the challenge.
